I know summer is almost over, but the truth is I make this salad year-round. My ex-roomie Jen and I perfected Barefoot Contessa’s recipe while living in our beloved treehouse apartment on Palmerston Boulevard. Over the years we’ve adjusted the original recipe to suit our tastes, adding zucchini, fresh garlic and pine nuts. Jen even infuses her olive oil with a few hot peppers to add a little heat.
The rustic serving bowl is available at William-Sonoma.
My girlfriend Ali is getting married near Banff this August and I’ve been put in charge of the photo booth design. The reception will be held outside overlooking the picturesque Kananaskis mountain range. Seeing as the view will be so beautiful, I want the photo frame to include the mountains and keep the backdrop minimal. I love the idea of ribbons in wheat gold, burlap, and lace strung between two trees. Ali’s theme is lips and moustaches so we’ve purchased a personalized sign from Etsy shop LitteRetreats.
As for photo booth props, I’ll be buying a variety of lips and moustaches. I love Mister Mustache’s sturdy collection over the usual paper ones – they’re made from molded plastic so you can reuse them. For a unique and fun touch, I’ve also sourced antlers from kijiji to mimic Lex and Loren’s wedding.
Every now and then, for inspiration, I go back to my Art of Instruction Postcards. The postcards are a collection of vintage illustrated charts from Chronicle Books. Part art, part science, my favourite ones are these botanical charts illustrated by Jung Koch Quentell.
As I do every year, I’m spending the long weekend at my cottage in Saint-Pierre-de-Wakefield, Québec. It’s gorgeous up here – well worth the 6 hour drive from Toronto. My father is rebuilding the cottage next summer, and he’s doing a lot of the work himself. It seems fitting that we’d outfit the place with handmade items, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favourites from Etsy.
In honour of Canada Day weekend I thought I’d share a few personal photos from one of my favourite spots in the country: Algonquin Park. The park holds a special place in my heart, and in my relationship…It’s the very definition of my happy place. Do you have a spot like that in Canada?
Happy Canada Day! Hope you have a great long weekend. Txx
