New York’s Punk Soirée

I’m embarrassed to say this, but I had no idea the Met Gala was themed… All these years, I had no idea! It took the most obvious of themes to make me realize how naive I’ve been – how could I have missed 2006′s ode to Britain, or 2011′s homage to the late Alexander McQueen? Ridiculous. But it won’t happen again, because naturally I’ve informed myself a little further. The Met Gala isn’t just about celebrities in beautiful, avant-garde dresses (or so I thought), it also celebrates the opening of The Met’s Fashion Exhibit at the Costume Institute, which this year is celebrating Punk: Chaos to Couture.

True to form, New York’s fashionistas embraced their inner punk last night and wore some beautiful pieces.

You got to love Sarah Jessica Parker’s mohawk, she turned punk into full-on glamour. Black, edgy cat eyes were all the rage, and new-comers Ashley Greene and Nina Dobrev did it best by keeping their lips neutral and jewellery minimal. But let’s be honest, there’s no doubt the award for best punk-wear goes to these four ladies below. Look at that hair!? It screams attitude. As does Cara Delevingne’s fierce look.

Of course, I’d like to pretend I’d be brave enough to wear a bad-ass punk dress, but I’d likely opt for a sweeter one, à la Michelle Williams. Even Ivanka Trump attempted punk, so surely I could do it too. Have you any favourite looks?

Eight spring must haves

I’m finally back in the city, which means I’m anxious to trade in my factory scrubs for some chic city wear. I love the bright colours and patterns from this season’s collections. The mix of stripes and bold flowers in J Crew’s outfit (no.1) is perfect for a weekend brunch date, while Club Monaco’s yellow collar (no.4) can dress up a plain white tee or maxi dress.

Since I’ll be back in the office soon, I’m also on the hunt for some light dresses. Some might say I’m a little conservative when it comes to office wear (er, maybe conservative for the creative world) but I just can’t imagine wearing yoga pants or boobie tanks to work. I once worked at a company whose receptionist wore short shorts and sky-high heels to work, and I always thought it looked incredibly unprofessional. Call me old fashioned, but I’m a believer in dressing for the job you want, not the one you have.
